Pin Type Insulators are the earliest developed overhead line insulators, but still popularly used in power network up to 36KV system, it is single stag, two insulators cannot be fixed together for higher voltage application, conductor is fixed on the top of the insulator by binding and metallic fixing arrangement provided only on bottom end of the insulator.
As the name suggests, the pin type insulator is mounted on a pin on the cross-arm on the pole. There is a groove on the upper end of the insulator. The conductor passes through this groove and is tied to the insulator with annealed wire of the same material as the conductor. Pin type insulators are used for transmission and distribution of electric power at voltages up to 33kV. Beyond operating voltage of 33kV, the pin type insulators become too bulky and hence uneconomical.
